Chapter 2

Time loses all meaning underground. Had it been minutes? Hours? This particular dungeon was infested with the undead, and Kaylin had dismantled more than a few skeletons and other grimy fiends already. She was careful to elude the occasional trap, but all of the exertion was starting to tire her out. A quick rest was in order, in a quiet corner. Reviewing the loot she'd picked up already, her fingers lingered on the cool, smooth metal of a matching pair of bracelets. While their patterns were identical, one was much larger than the other. With a chuckle, she mused that it'd fit Star's leg better than her own wrist!

Ultimately, she confronted what was surely the source of the infestation, a ghostly sorceror with a number of skeletal guardians. The battle was fierce, but she emerged victorious, in no small part due to the many enhancement gems and items she'd picked up during her delve. The quiet stillness that filled the cavern after the fight was unsettling, and Kaylin quickly made her way back to the entrance. Before exiting, she quickly shed all of the gems and trinkets she'd picked up. There was no way to know what magics had touched them, and any good adventurer knows that what comes from the dungeon, stays in the dungeon.

There was still daylight outside when she emerged. Unless...it hadn't been a whole day, had it? Star acted as if she'd only been gone moments. Strange.

It wasn't until she was halfway home that she noticed the bracelet was still on her wrist, and its matching partner was on Star's right front leg. When had she put that there? No matter, she thought to herself. She'd earned it, and why shouldn't she keep it?
